Study: Are Left Handed People Really Smarter Than Right Handed People?

Are lefties considered more intelligent than righties? Science did the numbers.

BY ELIZABETH MILLARD

Your dominant hand may be more influential than you think. Spoiler: There’s a chance lefties may rule us all.

While only between 10 to 13.5 percent of the U.S. population are left-handed—according to one estimate—prior studies have shown that left-handed people are over-represented among musicians, creative types, and chess players. Now, a new study published in Frontiers in Psychology piles on more evidence that lefties might be smarter than right-handed folk.

In the research, left-handers outperformed others in math when those tasks involved difficult problem solving, such as associating mathematical functions to a given set of data. But when the task wasn’t so demanding—for example, doing simple arithmetic—there was no difference between lefties and righties.

Despite the recent study, there’s still controversy in the scientific field regarding intelligence and dominant hand usage. For instance, one study concluded that left-handed kids slightly under-performed compared to righties in developmental measures.

But there may be certain advantages with drawing on the right side of the brain with more efficiency (That’s the case with left-handers, since the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. Righties rely more on their left side of their brain, which controls the right side of their body.)

For example, the brain’s right side is associated with creativity, intuition, insight, and music awareness. That may be why that evidence exists that so many musicians, artists, and intuitive thinkers are lefties.

Although math is a left-brain function, theoretically giving righties the advantage, the recent study highlighted creative problem solving and spatial reasoning, which are right-brain attributes. So while simple math might be a righty’s domain, the more complicated, thinky stuff might be more the boon of a lefty, the study suggests.

While the jury is still out on the full picture on handedness and intelligence, righties don’t need to concede to lefties just yet. In fact, whatever link may exist, it might not necessarily be a done deal.

In fact, it might be better for righties to “join” lefties, the researchers in the recent study suggest. In their findings, they note that some left-handers have better connections between the two brain hemispheres, which brings superior information processing and, basically, the best of both sides of the brain.

They write, “This opens up the possibility that we could all achieve enhanced connectivity by training ourselves to use both hands.” So get ready for some pretty scratchy handwriting in the meantime.

Can Carbonated Water Make You Fat?

A new study is bringing back a myth regarding carbonated water.
Here's what you should know.

Carbonated water is a common but tragically-misunderstood drink. In the past, we've debunked a number of myths about the bubbly beverage, explaining how the sparkling stuff isn't nearly bad as for you as the rumors make it out to be.

Among those beliefs is the insistence that sipping carbonated water will add inches to your waistline. Now, new research from Birzeit University in Palestine is bringing this stigma back to life.

The United Kingdom's National Health Service highlighted the university's study today, which was published in the journal Obesity Research and Clinical Practice.

The study tested rats and found a link between the consumption of carbonated beverages and weight gain. One set of mice were served fizzy drinks, while another was served flat soda and water.

After six months, they concluded that the intake of carbonated beverages stimulated increased production of ghrelin, a hormone that activates the appetites of both rats and humans, causing the rats to eat more and gain weight.

While the NHS notes that the UK media's coverage of the story has been accurate, they pointed out a number of flaws in the study's methods that should give you pause before you decide to dump your case of Canada Dry.

First and foremost, the experiment was tested on rats, not humans. On top of that, the study didn't account for external factors that could influence weight gain, such as an unhealthy diet or lack of exercise.

"Overall, this study raises an interesting possibility that fizzy drinks could stimulate the appetite and cause weight gain, which is definitely worthy of further research," the NHS said. Until then, we say you're still safe to drink a sparkling water.

Soda? Sorry, you're out of luck.

Sex - Your Best Medicine

Can sex be the answer to avoid cancer, protect your heart and look younger? You better believe it.

LOOK YOUNGER

Couples who have sex at least four times   week look over 10 years younger than the average adult, according to Royal Edinburgh Hospital research. “Pleasure derived from sex is a crucial factor in preserving youth due to the release of adrenaline, dopamine and norepinephrine,” says neuropsychologist Dr David Weeks, who conducted the study.

“Plus, sex triggers the release of human growth hormone, which combats free radicals from pollution. This helps preserve skin cell walls and relax muscles which could otherwise cause wrinkles.”

For optimum results, put that little black book away and start thinking about settling down. “It’s loving intercourse with a regular partner, not promiscuous sexual activity, which gives you the most benefit,” says Weeks. “Casual sex involves detrimental factors to staying youthful, such as anxiety and the absence of security. The key with long-term couples is emphasis on foreplay and cuddling before and after sex – which should last a minimum of 15 minutes – to initiate the chemical response.”

BEAT A COLD

This definitely trumps shelling out the cash for a flu jab. Having sex at least twice a week was found by US research at Wilkes University to boost your levels of immunoglobulin A by 20 per cent. The antibody protects against colds and other annoying viral infections.

The study found those who had the most “vigorous” sex were even  less prone to spurting the wrong kinds of bodily fluids. “The key to boosting these natural antibodies is intensity and fun, so move around and try out all sorts of positions,” says  Paula Hall, a sexual therapist with UK-based relationship consultancy Relate. “Try the ‘sexy scissors’ – with her lying on the edge of a bed, left leg over your right shoulder and right leg over your left. You swing her ankles in and out to the sides to trap your penis  inside her.”

DODGE CANCER

Unleash that libido now, reap the rewards later. Men who ejaculate at least seven times a week in their 20s were found to be over a third less likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer in later life than men who only muster three climaxes. Study author Professor  Graham Giles from the Cancer Council Victoria, Australia, reckons frequent ejaculation prevents carcinogens from building up in your prostatic ducts. “If the ducts are flushed out, there’s less build-up and damage to the cells lining them,” says Giles.

Before you go crazy on the self-love, Giles adds that, “The biggest benefit comes from one ejaculation daily rather than multiple ejaculations on certain days".

KILL PAIN

Orgasm can halve your sensitivity to pain, according to research in Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine. “Sex boosts endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, by up to a third in a matter of minutes,” says Professor Stuart Brody, sexual psychologist from the University of Paisley in the UK. “There’s concrete evidence this helps conditions such as back pain and migraine.”

“If you’re in pain, avoid anything overly vigorous and use long, slow strokes, focusing on grinding rather than shunting,” advises Hall. Try the “starfish”: Lie on the bed facing up, heads pointing in opposite directions, “scissor” your legs and grab each others’ hands for leverage. And fuel-up with a fruit salad to maximise pain relief – black grapes and oranges are high in potassium and vitamins C, B and B12, all of which boost endorphins, according to the University of Surrey.

SLEEP LIKE A BABY

During orgasm, the body produces oxytocin, a hormone that helps induce sleep. “There’s no doubt sex helps beat insomnia,” says Dr David Delvin, author of The Pocket Good Sex Guide. It’s what you could call an effective tool.

Boost your sleep potential by snacking on foods rich in the hormone serotonin, such as wholemeal bread or turkey, 30 minutes before heading horizontal. The serotonin hit helps your body absorb oxytocin into your nervous system.

LIVE LONGER

A 10-year University of Bristol study found mortality risk was 50 per cent lower among men who had two or more orgasms a week. “Regular orgasms increase immediate levels of the hormones DHEA and testosterone, which combat the free radicals that cause cancer and heart disease,” says study author Professor George Davey Smith.

The trick is to prolong your pleasure before orgasm. “The longer it lasts, the more good it does,” says Davey Smith. So,  teeter on the edge to increase the intensity of your orgasm. “Thrust as far as you can, then grind against her,” advises Hall. “Your penis will be in the wider part of the vagina, so there’ll be less stimulation. Keep the depth constant for 30 seconds, then thrust again.”

Nabila Razali – singer, actress, architect

Nabila Razali. Photo: The Star/ Raymond Ooi

Nabila Razali was studying to be an architect in Penang when she came upon the opportunity to be a singer.

“I’ve loved singing since I was a kid. In university, my friends and I used to busk when they were carnivals,” recalls Nabila, 25, in an interview.

“One day, we heard the auditions for Akademi Fantasia (AF) were held nearby our campus and we decided to give it a try.”

She auditioned for the 10th season of the reality singing series in 2013 and made it to the finals.

Nabila placed fifth in the competition, and decided to return to her studies. After graduating a year later with a degree in architecture, the singer felt she couldn’t give up on her music dreams just yet.

“I thought since I still have some fans and supporters (from AF), I can try to pursue my music career more seriously, that’s when I began to search for a single to record,” she says.

The toe-tapping Cemburu proved to be quite a hit. On top of that, she was offered to play the lead role in her first drama series, the 16-episode Hikayat Cinta Si Pematah Hati, which aired recently.

“After AF, Astro gave me the chance to star in two telemovies. I think that’s how they saw my acting talent and cast me for this drama.”

Nabila is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in architecture and will be releasing a new single, Pematah Hati. We caught up with her during a buka puasa event and asked what her favourite dishes are during the fasting month.

“I have a thing for sweet stuff. I love the caramel pudding and onde-onde from the Ramadan bazaar in Selayang, Selangor. And I always get the murtabak. I’ve never liked onions and although this murtabak has onions, I love it.”

1. Your single Cemburu has done quite well. Is there a story behind it?

Cemburu is about being jealous because there’s another woman (eyeing) your boyfriend. (Songwriters) Hael Husaini and Ezra Kong wrote the song.

When I first heard it, I realised that what was written in the lyrics, was also what was happening to me at that time, coincidentally. So I felt it. For me, delivery is very important, I want to people to feel like I’m really jealous when they listen to Cemburu.

I have read the feedback from my fans and many of them say they can relate to it. Some of them even tag their boyfriends with the hashtag #Cemburu (in social media posts) to help their boyfriends understand what they’re feeling.

I feel like I can represent all the women out there who feel that way.

2. Tell us about your upcoming single Pematah Hati.

Pematah Hati is like a continuation of Cemburu. In Cemburu, the other girl is eyeing your boyfriend. In Pematah Hati, you realise he has been returning the girl’s affections and that you can’t trust the guy.

The song won’t sound sad, it will still keep to Cemburu’s lightness because she’s trying to be a strong woman who’s not lamenting over the guy’s absence from her life. You love him but you’re mad at him and you don’t want him to be in your life. I think there will be people out there who can relate to this song too.

3. You played the lead in Hikayat Cinta Si Pematah Hati. What was that like?

I was very scared. Before this, I’d only played supporting roles in telemovies. This was a drama series aired on a primetime slot. And being paired with Alif Satar, my nervousness doubled. I had to keep up with Alif. Thankfully, everyone was very helpful. There were certain scenes that I was afraid of filming, but they calmed me down and made me feel like it wasn’t such a big deal.

4. Why is furthering your studies important to you?

As an artiste, I think we have to have an education background too, because we don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. I’m grateful for what I have now – my singing and acting, my degree, and now my Master’s.

I just want to be an example to people that it doesn’t mean if you become an artiste, you stop studying. At the end of the day, my education is a back-up plan for me in case singing and acting don’t work out.

Juliana Evans shares what’s different about married life

Che Puan Juliana Evans remains active in the entertainment scene after getting married.
Photo: The Star/Faihan Ghani

Life has changed quite a bit for the newly-married Che Puan Juliana Evans.
Last April, the 27-year-old actress married Tengku Shariffuddin Shah Tengku Sulaiman, 29, who is a member of both the Selangor and Johor royal households.

Juliana says the difference between single and married life is that now she has to consider more than just her own needs.

“It’s not just about me anymore. Before, it was about me wanting to do this and that for myself. Now, it’s more about us, my husband and I, and our new bigger family,” she shares.

Juliana was at a press event in Kuala Lumpur promoting the Bahasa Malaysia-dubbed version of The Secret Life Of Pets.

Waking up next to her husband is another thing she is getting used to. “Before this, I slept with my mum and sibling; now I wake up with my husband by my side.”

The actress, who is of Malay and English parentage, now lives with her in-laws. Although there is protocol to follow, Juliana reveals that life in the royal household is pretty laid-back.

“His family is very welcoming. They’re very casual people; not too strict, not much protocol,” she notes.

Looking ahead, Juliana says she still plans to stay active in the entertainment industry.

“My in-laws are very encouraging (of my acting career). And now that I’m starting to venture into (the fashion and accessories) business, they’ve also been very encouraging about that. They’re not asking me to stop working.”

She adds that she is selective about the projects she takes on, something she has been practising even before she got married.

In the Bahasa Malaysia-dubbed version of The Secret Life Of Pets, Juliana voices Katie, owner of the protagonist, a terrier named Max. The animated film chronicles the twists and turns in Max’s life when Katie takes in a new pet.

Juliana Evans voices the character Katie, a woman who adopts a dog in The Secret Life Of Pets.

“I’ve done voice-overs for movies and commercials before; this is my first animated movie. It was a lot of fun. The only challenge is making sure my voice is in sync with the character.”

Next up, viewers will get to see Juliana on the big screen in the film Bella Dan Jamie, which is slated for an October release.

The film centres on the relationship between two best friends, played by Juliana and Liyana Jasmay.
“Even though we are acting, in real life, Liyana and I are best friends. So that friendship comes off naturally on screen.

“The first time I acted, I worked with Liyana. That’s why we are really close that way and we love to work with each other.”

The Secret Life Of Pets, dubbed in Bahasa Malaysia, premieres on June 25 at 8pm on HBO (Astro Ch 411).

French Fries: A Recipe For Death?

A new study links french fries with a higher risk of death.

It’s no surprise that French fries aren’t great for your health, but a new study is linking eating the fried food at least twice a week with an increased risk of death.

In an eight-year study, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined the fried potato consumption of 4,400 men and women between the ages of 45 and 79. At the end of the study, 236 of the participants had passed away. The researchers discovered that the people who indulged in a serving of fried potatoes — anything from fries to hash browns to tater tots — on more than two occasions per week more than doubled their risk of death.

They found that there was no connection between eating regular white potatoes and death, so breathe easy fans of mashed potatoes and potato salad. In fact, while white potatoes often get a bad rep, fans of them can celebrate the fact that the vegetable has healthy amounts of fibre, micronutrients and vitamins, that balances out their high glycemic index.

Overall take this study with a grain of salt, since for now it’s an association and no one is branding the popular side dish as an actual killer. More research will need to be conducted before researchers can conclusively say that overindulging in the fatty, salty, starchy vegetable actually causes an increased risk of death.

However, even still, it wouldn’t hurt to occasionally swap traditional French fries for sweet potatoes and to not think of a fried potato as one of your recommended 3-5 servings of vegetables a day.

7 Ways to Effectively Cope with Emotional Stress

Stress is an unavoidable part of life. Whether it comes from the expectations in our jobs or relationships with those around us, it’s always there. Sometimes the amount of stress we face daily can be overwhelming. Emotional stress is hard to pinpoint because it can be caused by so many factors. However, there are multitudes of healthy ways to cope. Here are seven ways to effectively manage and cope with emotional stress.

1. Don’t isolate yourself.
A lot of the stresses we face will make us feel alone as if we can’t talk to anyone. It’s necessary to reach out and sometimes get help from other sources to relieve stress. Even if you don’t feel like socializing, being around others in a positive way is a great option to clear your mind of negative thoughts.  If you don’t particularly want to be around your friends or family, you can volunteer with organizations in your community.

2. Try meditation.
Meditation is a great option because it is relaxing, helps clear or control thoughts, and can help relieve emotional stress. By focusing on being calm, you’ll learn to redirect your thoughts instead of worrying about the negatives. Mindful breathing is part of meditation that regulates how quickly you breathe. Deep, calming breaths will be more helpful than short, quick ones. You can also practice some sensory training input and use a stimulus (like a smell) to help soothe you.

3. Find a therapist.
If the idea of sharing your emotional stress with friends or family makes you uncomfortable, you can always seek out a therapist to help if stress is reaching levels that make it hard to get through the day. By talking out some of the issues you’re facing, you’ll feel relief. You may also discover some of the causes for your stress, which will allow you to make  changes to eliminate them.

4. Get an emotional support animal.
Studies have shown that pets are a great influence in our daily lives. Sometimes just being able to share a bond with another living creature is enough to make us feel better and reduce our anxiety. According to OnlineDogtor.com you can request an emotional support animal letter from your doctor or psychologist. They will explain what condition you have and this formal letter will be accepted by most places, including by your landlord and HUD.

5. Take care of your body.
Exercise is a great stress reliever. Yoga can be soothing and make you feel relaxed inside and out. You’ll want to avoid alcohol or drugs as they would likely add to your anxieties and stress. Eating well and regularly will also help contribute to helping you feel more stable, reduce moodiness, and keep your energy levels high. One of the best things you can do for your body and your mind is to get an adequate amount of sleep.

6. Set some alone time.
This is not the same as completely closing yourself off from the world. Sometimes we get overwhelmed with all the errands and socializing that we fit into a day. Taking a break to unwind and destress is a good idea. You can treat yourself to a spa day or go to the movies alone. You can try writing in a journal during this time to privately work out some of your ideas. You may also want to spend this time relaxing in nature to get away from digital influences.

7. Accept your emotions.
It’s important to address our emotional states as they happen. Rather than try to bottle up the emotion, allow yourself to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. Accepting your emotions and the stress they cause will allow you to let go and stop obsessing over them. By focusing on how you feel at the moment you feel stress, you’ll feel more grounded and less out of control. You’ll also reduce the need to redo those moments so you won’t have to relive any of your stressful periods.

Comic book series Watchmen might be a TV show

The Watchmen comics is a popular series from DC. Photo: DC Comics

Looks like Damon Lindelof may be going back to work for HBO. Fresh off the critically acclaimed series finale of The Leftovers, Lindelof is in talks to develop an adaptation of the comic book series Watchmen to the cable network.

This will be HBO’s second attempt at developing a series based on the landmark DC Comics miniseries by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The premium channel had kicked the tires on a Watchmen project in 2014. Sources say Lindelof’s take on the series would be starting over from scratch independent of that effort.

Premiering in 1985, Watchmen was a serious-minded deconstruction of superhero comics loosely inspired by characters from the Charlton Comics library, which were owned by DC. Set in a universe in which the appearance of costumed heroes in the mid-20th Century had altered the course of history – leading to US victory in Vietnam and a Nixon presidency that stretched into the mid-1980s – Watchmen followed a group of crimefighters investigating the murder of one of their own.

In the process, those characters – including Doctor Manhattan, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and Rorschach – uncover a conspiracy with enormous implications.

HBO declined to comment on the project.

Watchmen was adapted into a feature film produced by Warner Bros and directed by Zack Snyder in 2009. No deal is yet in place for the HBO project, which will be unrelated to that movie produced by Warner Bros Television, where Lindelof is under an overall deal. – Reuters/Debra Birnbaum

Many medical studies have found tea tree oil to kill bacteria, fungi and strains of viruses making it a favourite remedy for decades. These days, tea tree oil has become even more popular with it being an ingredient in face and hair products, massage oils and even detergents.

So, how can we really benefit from this amazing, natural remedy?

The Benefits Of Tea Tree Oil

Don’t just take people’s word for the amazing power of tea tree oil. Many scientific studies have been conducted in order to prove just how beneficial this oil is.

Its exceptional healing properties mean it can have several different uses.

Tea Tree Oil For Acne
This oil can help heal many forms of skin conditions including acne, rashes, eczema, and fungal infections but acne is the most common association with tea tree oil. This is because it contains strong antibacterial and antifungal compounds which penetrates the skin and unblocks sebaceous glands. This has led to studies that have found tea tree oil to be as effective as benzoyl peroxide but without the harshness.

On top of that, it can help against scarring which is a common side effect from continuous acne on the face and body.

Tea Tree Oil For Hair
Tea tree oil is known for soothing dry scalp and for getting rid of unsightly dandruff. It also helps unclog hair follicles and nourishes the roots of the hair which helps your hair to grow more strong and healthy.

For those with kids who are prone to getting head lice, tea tree oil has even been found to kill lice as well as reducing the number of eggs that hatch making it a more natural way to tackle this common problem.

Tea Tree Oil For Cuts And Infections
Because tea tree oil is anti-bacterial, it makes an amazing natural way to clean any cuts and tackle any infections found in wounds.

It can also deal with fungal infection such as toenail fungus, ringworm and athlete’s foot as it’s so effective in killing parasites. If you suffer from warts, then applying tea tree oil directly to them twice a day for around 30 days, will go towards being wart-free. Tea tree oil contains antiviral and antiseptic properties that fight against the virus.

Tea Tree Oil For Eczema
Eczema is a common conditions which can leave you with sensitive, dry and itchy skin. Tea tree oil can help relieve skin inflammation and soothe the irritation that comes with it. It not only calms down the itching which can lead to more irritation and infection, but it also heals the skin stopping any further inflammation and spreading.

Tea Tree Oil For Sunburn
If you’re prone to getting sunburnt, then make sure you’ve packed some tea tree oil along with your swimwear. Tea tree oil is a tissue regenerator and helps to rebuild damaged skin which is exactly what you need for sunburnt skin. It’s also an analgesic which means it’s a natural pain reliever while the anti-inflammatory properties soothe the painful burning sensation and makes your sunburn a little more bearable.

Tea Tree Oil For Odours
Tea tree oil contains antimicrobial properties which means it has the ability to kill the bacteria on your skin that causes odour. You can use tea tree oil as a natural deodorant as it’s kind to the kind and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals that are found in shop-bought deodorants.

And of course, if you do suffer from foot fungal infections then you probably have the problem of smelly shoes. Turning tea tree oil into a spray and applying it to your shoes will help eradicate any horrible odours.

Are There Side Effects To Tea Tree Oil?
Despite it’s amazing uses, tea tree oil can be harmful in some instances. It should never be ingested internally due to its potent properties as it can cause stomach upsets, diarrhea, vomiting and even hallucinations.

It’s always advised to do a skin test using tea tree oil to eliminate any possible allergies. If your skin develops a rash when coming into contact with tea tree oil, refrain from using it.

Where To Buy And How To Store Tea Tree Oil
You can purchase tea tree oil from any good pharmacy or natural goods store. Once bought, make sure you store it in a glass container never plastic as this can cause terpinen 4-ol to leach out of the oil and making it obsolete.

Always store it below 25 degrees preferably in the fridge to keep it more fresh over time. Warm temperatures and strong light can cause the oil to breakdown so don’t leave it on an exposed bathroom shelf.

If stored correctly, tea tree oil should last 6 months after opening or up to 2 years if unopened.

Tea Tree Oil vs Oregano Oil
Oregano oil is another powerful herbal oil that has many healthy properties similar to tea tree essential oil. The main difference is that oregano oil can be ingested and acts as a good aid for digestion problems by increasing the secretion of digestive juices in the stomach. It also maximises the absorption of nutrients from food by the body as well as helping enzymes that break down the food more efficiently.

Not only that, but oregano oil is a good antiviral remedy which means it can strengthen you immune system against colds, flu, mumps and measles.

So, if you’re considering purchasing either tea tree oil or oregano oil, both are amazing at being antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiparasitic but if you want that extra health boost internally then oregano oil would benefit you the best.

How to style lace-up shoes

Dress up jeans and a T-shirt or add a casual resort vibe with lace-up shoes

The lace-up ballet flat was all the rage last year, especially after the feminine style showed on the runway for Michael Kors Spring 2015. It was soon seen everywhere, from French fashion house Isabel Marant to high-street brands such as Topshop.

Celebrities such as American singer and model Zendaya Coleman, British model Alexa Chung and singer Rihanna have all been seen wearing variations of the style.

This year, the lace-up trend continues to be strong and is seen in other footwear variations - Salvatore Ferragamo has lace-up sandals, while Roberto Cavalli featured lace-up pumps on the runway.

HOW TO WEAR IT

Lace-up sandals are a good match for skirts and floral dresses - they look feminine without making the overall look too girly.

They are also a great substitute for casual days, when comfort is a priority, but flip-flops are too sloppy.

If open-toe shoes are not an option, round-toe flats will give your look a softer edge as compared to the popular pointed-toe version.

Laces should end either below the calves to avoid visually cutting off the legs and making them look stumpy, or tied up to the knee to elongate the legs.

This Is What Will Happen When You Eat Avocados Every Day

You’ve probably seen avocados being touted as a heart-healthy superfood in recent years. Realistically, the truth isn’t too far off from the hype. The next time you’re grabbing that burrito or turkey sandwich, you might want to consider adding a healthy dollop of guacamole. Here are four reasons that you should consider eating a little bit of avocado each day.

1. You may reduce your risk of heart disease.

Heart disease is the number 1 killer in the United States, affecting nearly 27 million adults, so it only makes sense that we would want to protect ourselves by being more health-conscious in our dietary choices. Avocados have been shown to positively benefit our cardiovascular system in a number of ways due to its low saturated fat and high unsaturated fat content (predominantly the monounsaturated fat (MUFA) variety). Consuming excess saturated fat (>10% of total calories) may raise your LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. On the contrary, consuming adequate unsaturated fat in your diet may help lower LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol), maintain HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol) and potentially improve your insulin sensitivity.

In addition its nutritious fat content, avocados also contain a potent mix of nutrients (e.g., potassium and lutein), including plenty of antioxidants such as carotenoids, callexanthophylls and phenols. These compounds can help prevent inflammation and oxidative stress in the blood vessels while facilitating improved blood flow.

2. You may have an easier time maintaining your weight

Eating fat to lose fat; who would have thought? Avocados can help with weight-loss and maintaining a healthy BMI by promoting a feeling of satiety. A recent study showed that including avocado in meals helped extend feelings of fullness and reduced the desire to overindulge. The belly-filling properties of avocados is aided by their high fiber content, about 14g per fruit on average. In addition, higher avocado consumption has been associated with smaller waistlines and lower BMIs in observational studies.  Lastly, some research has even shown that weight-loss diets higher in MUFA, like the kind avocados are packed with, may prove healthier for your heart than low-fat weight-loss diets.

3. You might reduce your risk of cancer

Avocados provide us with numerous phytochemicals that may help prevent cancer, including the previously discussed xanthophylls and phenols. A protein compound called glutathione, along with the xanthophyll lutein (both found in avocados), have been associated with decreased rates of oral cancer. Preliminary data also show promising results for avocados’ potential role in reducing risk of both breast and prostate cancers. Additionally, preliminary studies demonstrate that a specific type of fav derived from avocados is able to exert anti-cancer effects on acute myeloid leukemia cells. Together, these studies show that further research needs to be conducted to draw more conclusive results.

4. You will protect your skin and eyes well into old age

As it turns out, avocado carotenoids do quite a number of things for our body. Both lutein and another compound found in avocados called zeaxanthin can slow age-related ocular decline and prevent vision dysfunction. In addition, these same two nutrients also act as buffers against oxidative UV damage, keeping our skin smooth and healthy. The bioavailability (ease of absorption by our body) of carotenoids from avocados compared to many other fruits and vegetables makes eating avocados every day a sensible choice.
