My old Maybank Card was a Bankcard and not a Debit Card but now I was given a Debit Card. I informed the Bank Officer I don't want a Debit Card as I already have a Credit Card, but I was told that all ATM Cards are now Debit Cards.
Then I asked if there is any way that I can block unauthorised people from using my Debit Card to make purchases.
(I suppose all of you know that with the PAY WAVE feature, anyone can use your card to make purchases below RM250 with just a tap on the machine at the Cashier's Terminal with no need for a PIN. Only purchases above RM 250 require a PIN. This applies also to Credit Cards. )
The Officer then told me how to block purchases by doing the following:
*(This is for Maybank. Other Banks may have similar instructions. )
At the ATM after you put in your Debit Card and entered your PIN (the usual procedure)
1. Go to "Other Transactions"
2. Click on "Change Limit"
3. Go to "Purchase Limit"
4. Select "No Purchase"
5. Enter your IC number and verify it.
You will be asked to verify that you have selected "No Purchase."
Verify that and you have finished this process.
So if your ATM Card falls into wrong hands like through snatch theft etc no one can go buy things (below RM250) using your Card.
